Artistic Development
I track my artist development through digitized images of my art, sketchbooks, and an analog portfolio. I am not consistent with sketch booking by any means, and the only time I reflect on my portfolio is when I have to move it or show it for some reason. My reflections are usually negative, but becoming more positive. I find it difficult to look at anything I make and not see myself it in, and therein despise it to some degree.
My ideas for making art come from all sorts of places. There is not one specific place that I can think of that influences me more than any other place. I do practice previsualization, and then revisualization. I don’t know how anyone starts making art without having an idea of what they’re doing first. I let the artwork become what it want and am not disappointed when it doesn’t look like the original vision. Nothing’s perfect.
I think that my artwork is reflective of my creative energy in that there is no firm rule to how it will manifest itself. I am not an extreme, opinionated person. I change my mind all the time. I don’t own any concept or style. My artwork’s varied subject matter and style are reflective of this.
I don’t think that personal matters are reflected in my artwork at all. I don’t doubt that they someday will be, but so far my artwork has mostly served academic or decorative purposes. I don’t think that the art would have failed academically or decoratively if it had an emotional undertone. I just haven’t gotten there yet.
Why I Make Art
I make art because I enjoy the process. My initial inspiration for creating art comes from my desire to visual depict something that I feel has not been depicted yet. Whether it is something from my imagination, an image that represents something for me of explains an idea, or something else entirely; having something visually embodied in a way confirms my existence for me. When its just an idea or a though it feels like it’s just bouncing around in space and like I’m a second away from losing it. It’s like something you see in your perioral vision that disappears if you look at it straight on; it’s fleeting. Paintings, on the other hand, are tangible. They last. They speak for themselves. I also enjoy the process of making things itself. I do indeed get in a zone when make art that allows me to be super productive for a long amount of time. I am not the type of person who works on a piece of art for a few minutes at a time. I can’t drop it when I’m in the middle of it. I’m the artistic equivalent of a marathon runner. Slow, steady, consistent- stopping only when the art work is ready for me to stop

First Post
My name is Jamie, and I am creating this blog to fulfill a journalling requirement for the Senior Seminar for my BA in Studio Art at William Paterson University. While I have tried to start journalling in the past, I repeatedly failed at it because I didn't want to waste my time and energy rambling about that which current-me likes and what current-me is currently doing. No doubt I'd love to read the blather of past-me, just as future-me will presumably enjoy reading about current-me. Regardless, it's never worked out.
This journaling project will be different because I will be given prompts from the professor of my afore- mentioned seminar. I also have an objective, which is to compile things that I like and things that inspire me. The learning outcome for this objective is to help me narrow in on my ultimate goals and aspirations. Unlike many of my peers graduating with a BA in Art Studio, however, I have a strongly concentrated goal; to become an art teacher. My full degree, a dual major, is BA Art Sudio/K-12 Education.
